Running a Live Session

A step-by-step guide for facilitators running an active tabletop exercise.

Run Your First Exercise

As a facilitator, you control the pace of the exercise. Here is your core journey:

1. Schedule or start a live session

Create a session from your saved template. Note the room code and the join link. Share this with your participants via email or a calendar invite.

2. Brief participants

Participants will open the join link, enter the code, choose their role, and enter a display name.

3. Lobby → Go live

When people are ready and present in the lobby, click Start exercise to begin the simulation.

4. During the session

Release injects in order (or as designed). You are responsible for:

  • Handling votes and free-text responses.
  • Pausing the simulation if needed for deeper discussion.
  • Utilizing facilitator notes on injects to guide the conversation.

[!TIP] Keep the conversation moving. If discussions get stuck, use injects to inject urgency or introduce new information.

5. Observations / Hotwash

If your application tier supports structured observations, fill out the strengths, gaps, risks, and recommendations during or right after injects.

6. End the session

Once all phases are complete and the hotwash is finished, complete or close the session using the UI controls. This will finalize the data and begin generating the report.
